PRINTING PROCESS

What is Engraving?
Engraving is a printing process in which artwork is etched into a metal plate. When ink is applied, these etched areas act as small wells to hold the ink. The paper is then forced against the plate under tons of pressure. The ink is lifted from the etched areas, which creates raised letters and images on the paper. Engraving produces very sharp and precise lines and makes a bruise on the back of the paper. Engraving is more costly than thermography and flat printing.

What is Thermography?
Thermography produces raised printing similiar in appearance to engraving and is a great alternative to the more expensive engraving process. Thermography is a process where slow drying ink is applied to paper and while the ink is still wet, it is lightly dusted with a colorless resinous powder. The paper passes through an oven to bake the powder and fuse it to the ink. The cost for Thermography and Flat Printing is usually about the same.

What is Flat Printing?
Flat  or Lithography Printing is a process in which ink is applied to paper on an offset press. The ink is completely flat on the paper with a matte finish.
